HOUSE BILL 938

 

AN ACT TO REQUIRE THE STATE BOARD OF EDUCATION TO REPORT ON THE NATIONAL BOARD FOR PROFESSIONAL TEACHING STANDARDS' PROGRAM FOR IDENTIFYING HIGHLY PROFESSIONAL TEACHERS AND RECOMMEND A PLAN FOR PROVIDING MONETARY INCENTIVES FOR TEACHERS TO PARTICIPATE IN THAT PROGRAM.

 

The General Assembly of North Carolina enacts:

 

Section 1.  The General Assembly finds that teacher participation in the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards' proposed program for identifying highly professional teachers has the potential to improve substantially the academic performance of students; therefore, prior to the convening of the 1995 General Assembly, the State Board of Education shall report to the General Assembly and the Joint Legislative Education Oversight Committee on the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards' program for identifying highly professional teachers and the potential effect that participation of North Carolina teachers in that program will have on the academic performance of students enrolled in North Carolina schools.  The State Board of Education shall include in its report a recommended plan for providing monetary incentives for teachers to participate in that program.

Sec. 2.  This act is effective upon ratification.
