SENATE BILL 413

 

AN ACT TO DELETE THE REQUIREMENT THAT COUNTY SUPERINTENDENTS OF SCHOOLS BE APPROVED BY THE STATE BOARD OF EDUCATION AND THE SUPERINTENDENT OF PUBLIC INSTRUCTION.

 

The General Assembly of North Carolina enacts:

 

Section 1.  G.S. 115C-271 is amended by deleting from the first sentence of the first paragraph thereof the words "subject to the approval of the Superintendent of Public Instruction and the State Board of Education", by deleting the eighth sentence of the first paragraph and by adding, following the first paragraph, a new paragraph to read:

"It is the policy of the State of North Carolina that the superintendents of each of the several school administrative units be hired solely at the discretion of the local boards of education. However, a candidate for superintendent of a local school administrative unit must meet the minimum educational and experience requirements established by the State Board of Education."

Sec. 2.  This act is effective upon ratification.
