AN ACT RELATING TO THE TERMS OF OFFICE OF MEMBERS OF THE HALIFAX COUNTY BOARD OF EDUCATION.

 

The General Assembly of North Carolina do enact:

 

Section 1. The four members of the Halifax County Board of Education elected in the regular election of 1968 who receive the highest numbers of votes at said election shall serve for terms of four years. The remaining three members who are elected at the 1968 election shall serve for terms of two years. When their terms expire their successors shall be elected for terms of four years.

Sec. 2. At the primary election for county officials in Halifax County in 1968 there shall be submitted to the voters the question of approval or disapproval of the provisions of Section 1 of this Act. Those who favor the provisions of Section 1 of this Act shall vote a ballot on which are written the words "FOR four-year staggered terms for members of the Halifax County Board of Education". Those opposed shall vote a ballot on which are written the words "AGAINST four-year staggered terms for members of the Halifax County Board of Education". If a majority of those voting in said election vote in favor of the provisions of this Act, then Section 1 of this Act shall be in full force and effect commencing with the election of members of the Halifax County Board of Education in 1968. If the proposition is defeated, all members shall serve for terms of two years.

Sec. 3. All laws and clauses of laws in conflict with this Act are hereby repealed.

Sec. 4. This Act shall become effective upon its ratification.
