AN ACT TO AMEND G.S. 20-166 TO EXEMPT PERSONS FROM CIVIL LIABILITY FOR RENDERING ASSISTANCE TO PERSONS INJURED IN MOTOR VEHICLE ACCIDENTS.

 

The General Assembly of North Carolina do enact:

 

Section 1.  G.S. 20-166 as the same appears in the 1963 Cumulative Supplement to the General Statutes is hereby amended by adding thereto a new subsection to be designated "(d)" and to read as follows:

"(d)      Any person who renders first aid or emergency assistance at the scene of a motor vehicle accident on any street or highway to any person injured as a result of such accident, shall not be liable in civil damages for any acts or omissions relating to such services rendered, unless such acts or omissions amount to wanton conduct or intentional wrongdoing."

Sec. 2.  This Act shall not apply to causes of action arising prior to the effective date hereof.

Sec. 3.  All laws and clauses of laws in conflict with this Act are hereby repealed.

Sec. 4.  This Act shall become effective upon its ratification.
