AN ACT TO AMEND G.S. 163‑84 TO REQUIRE REGISTRARS TO REPORT BY TELEPHONE OR OTHERWISE THE PRECINCT VOTE TO THE COUNTY BOARD OF ELECTIONS UPON COMPLETION OF THE COUNTING IN ALL PRIMARIES AND ELECTIONS.

 

The General Assembly of North Carolina do enact:

 

Section 1.  Amend G.S. 163‑84 by adding to the end of the Section a new paragraph to read as follows:

"Immediately following the completion of the counting of the votes on election night and the certification of the official precinct returns, the registrar, or one of the judges selected by him, shall report the total precinct vote for each candidate or proposition by telephone or otherwise to the office of the county board of elections, which report shall be unofficial and shall have no binding effect upon the official county canvass to follow thereafter. The chairman or secretary or clerk to the county board of elections shall, as soon as such reports are received from the registrars, publish such reports to the press and to the radio and television. The cost thereof shall be charged to the operating expense of the county board of elections."

Sec. 2.  All laws and clauses of laws in conflict with the provisions of this Act are hereby repealed.

Sec. 3.  This Act shall be in full force and effect from and after its ratification.
